Trevaun ~ Class of ’08

Over the weekend I photographed an awesome guy entering his senior year of high school. My husband and I are friends with his mom & dad, and I have to say it publicly…they are incredible parents. Good looking, smart, and full of ambition, Trevaun has quite a future ahead of him! We had a great time wandering around downtown Columbus chatting about school and his college plans…I even made him laugh at some of the corny set-ups I made him do. He was a great sport though, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to get to know him better!

Best of luck with all you pursue, Trevaun!

Looking dapper and ready for success…

Trevaun laughed at my idea about having him sit in front of this ‘Education’ sign…but I figured his parents would appreciate it…it’s what should be on his mind right now 😉

There were a few times when I regretted not having a step stool with me…he is TALL, and I thought this photo showed off his ample height nicely…

I have just a few free dates left for September, so if anyone would like to make an appointment for Senior Pictures, email me at chantal.neweyes [at]

I’m a good mom, really…

But I have to admit that I can’t wait for school to begin next week. I love my kids to death, but having all three at home All day Every day is exhausting. And I have more and more work to do which never gets done because the kids always want to go somewhere and do something, and I can’t exactly expect them to sit in front of the TV all day just to appease me….so we end up going out—to the park, to the pool, to the movies…where ever.

It’s been raining the past few days so the other day during a downpour they ran outside in their pajamas.

(as a matter of fact…they’re outside in the rain right now!)

Seriously though….my anticipation for back to school….or BTS as we call it…is as much for their benefit as it is my own. A 12 and 10 yr old brother and sister duo can only tolerate each other for so long….I know they are more than ready to have the 7-hours-a-day break from each other. The only one who will really suffer is the Baby (ok, she’s 4 1/2, not exactly a baby anymore, but the name stuck: “The Baby”….she’ll be 28 and we’ll still be calling her The Baby). She adores her brother and sister and will surely miss them every day. Luckily though, she starts pre-K in 2 weeks, which is 4 days a week….great for her, great for me 🙂

What also begins are the hurried evenings of dinner-homework-bath-bed, the driving back and forth from schools to dance rehearsals, to drama practices, to the library, to the store because someone needs yet another binder or more pencils or something else crazy, back to the dance studio to pick someone up, back to the store again because some else forgot to tell me they need to pack lunch tomorrow for whatever reason and of course we don’t have anymore juice boxes left…and lets not forget the early mornings of “Moooomm where’s my ____??”; and “Mooooomm, I hate this outfit!”; and “Mooooommm I need money for _____!” —knowing full well I gave the other kid my last $5.

So umm…maybe I should just appreciate my last few days of lazy summer days, because with three kids going to three different schools, all leaving and coming home at different times, plus the full gamut of activities that all three are involved in, who am I kidding? I still won’t get any peace. 🙂

Awesome Sites For Photographers

Filed under: internet — chantal @ 9:00 am

Any of you reading who know me personally can attest to the fact that I am a huge internet geek. But can you blame me? There are so many great websites and cool things to be found on the web…I honestly can’t imagine life before my internet connection. What did I do all day?

Anyway… there are a few websites out there that I find absolutely invaluable as a photographer and I’d like to share them with you:

  • Strategy Avenue– authored by awesome photographer Laura Novak and her marketing guru fiancé John Meyer. Simply put, it’s a “business resource for photographers” loaded with great ideas and advice that everyone from the seasoned professional to the beginner can use.
  • Pro Photo Resource– get advice from the pros at the top o their game on this website…… its full of great tips and ideas in the form of articles and videos. I’m new to this site, but from what I’ve seen so far, I love it.

    The Concept of Beauty

The other day on The Online Photographer there was an interesting discussion about the concept of beauty, and particularly society’s warped concept of beauty. TOP linked to this website that shows interesting ‘before and afters’ that are done to models and actors with photoshop (roll over images with your mouse to see the effect). The results are quite profound.

Aside from the usual adjustments in lighting and contrast, Kelly Clarkson has obviously shed a few pounds sometime between the shoot and the final print. Amazing. It’s no wonder so many young girls and women are plagued with low self-esteem and body image issues. We are bombarded on a daily basis of images that aren’t even real.

The idea of photoshopped celebrities is certainly not new, and hopefully by now most people looking through magazines realize this…but as a mother of two young girls, I find this disconcerting. My 10 yr old daughter is just now beginning to look through fashion and teen magazines, and I’ve explained to her how the photos she’s looking are manipulated. But still, I wonder and worry about what damage might be done to her precious self-esteem.

I’m not criticizing the use of photoshop of those who use it to create these images….my critique is directed towards a society who craves them and who does not object this impossible ideal of beauty. One of the commenters on the TOP article writes (in response to another comment that criticized the re-touching):

“…I think you’re undercutting the creativity and talent demonstrated by high quality retouching. Blame for the homogeneity of celebrity portraiture should lie squarely on what the publicists request, what the public expects, and, more broadly, on what our culture calls beautiful. […] (A note about my cred: I worked as a celebrity retoucher for a bit more than a year before I got tired of wasting my Art and making fourteen year olds anorexic.)…”

Dove’s Campaign For Real Beauty tries to rectify this phenomena. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the website and see this provocative video here.

Some more rather amazing transformations can be seen here. But these demonstrate a photographers ability to adapt and create images that are needed for a client when the conditions are less than perfect…or in some cases non-existent.

As a photographer, this brings up an interesting point. I want to make my clients look their best, and I could certainly apply the same techniques used above, but I don’t want to. I don’t want to be part of the problem, but rather, part of the solution. Making people look beautiful as they are, showing a woman how beautiful she really is, showing her natural beauty in a way that perhaps she hadn’t seen herself in before, bringing out the best in a person; that is what I try to do.

It’s time we said “enough” of fake, impossible beauty and learn to love ourselves for our natural selves. That’s my goal as a photographer, and most importantly, as a mother.

    Free Wedding Photography!

As many of you may already know, I am currently building my own wedding & lifestyle photography business. Starting one’s own business is definitely a labor of love… many, many ups and downs. My business has been a lifetime in the making and I am proud to announce that the official launch of Chantal Stone Photography will be in 2008 (or sooner!). (I’ll announce when my pro website is complete!)

(UPDATE: My new website can be found at Check it out!!)

I never intended to become a wedding photographer, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else. It is such an incredible honor to be chosen to document one of the most important and special days in a family’s life. Weddings are emotional, beautiful, intimate, and joyous…and after the food is eaten, the music has stopped and dresses and gowns put away, what’s left are the memories of the spectacular day, and of course the photographs.

It’s such an important job to photograph a wedding, one that I feel I was born to do. It is truly a blessing!

I have been very busy these last few months doing all sorts of things to build my portfolio, build my brand, and simply get my name out there. And now I can use your help!

I want to photograph a complete wedding for FREE sometime during 2008. No strings attached, I will do the engagement photo session, full wedding coverage and reception absolutely FREE (a $2000+ value). I am also willing to travel anywhere…as far as travel expenses, I’m sure somehow we can get it taken care of!

    Here are the rules:

    1. Any couple getting married sometime in 2008 is eligible. The date and location need to already be set.
    2. Send me your story (or the story of your nomination) about why you should have your wedding photographed for free along with a recent photo of you and your fiancé.
    3. The final three couples and stories will be posted here December 16th for people to vote.
    4. The winner will be announced on December 31st .
    5. Email your story and photo, along with the date and location of your wedding to: with “FREE WEDDING NOMINATION” in the subject line.

So please tell your friends, tell your family, and announce it at work….tell everyone you know and help get the word out for this amazing offer. I’m so excited to be able to do what I love purely for the joy of it.

Together, we can make a deserving couple’s dream come true!

I currently have the following dates UNAVAILABLE–

    Jewel & Nijel

This past Saturday I spent the morning photographing one of the sweetest couples I have ever met. Jewel and Nijel are clearly crazy about each other…half the pictures I took are of the two of them snuggling, hugging, or holding hands! And their wedding day is on their one-year anniversary, in October. I feel so honored that they have let me into their lives to document such a momentous occasion.

Here are a few of my favorites from Saturday’s shoot:
