Rejection #2

I just received a rejection letter from the curatorial committee for the exhibition I previously wrote about here. The letter read in part:

We regret to inform you that your application was not selected. Due to the large number of submissions of high quality and merit, we were only able to select a limited amount of work. It was a truly difficult task to make our final selections.

Oh well. So far, the score is 0/2.
I think I need to go listen to some David Gray or Alanis, or something else equally depressing.

  1. Don’t listen to Alanis! Bummer not to get selected but maybe it’ll be 1/3.

  2. Something you need to keep in mind when submitting work is that at the good venues, they receive WAY more submitted work than they can display – at least a factor of ten more stuff, and sometimes far more than that. It’s not uncommon for them to receive ten really strong submissions for every spot they have in the exhibition.

The upshot is that even when your work is quite strong, often the curator doesnt select it because it doesn’t fit with the rest of the stuff that they’re selecting, or some other reason that’s unrelated to the strength of your work. I’ve juried shows, and one the the frustrating aspects of that job is the amount of really good work you have to exclude simply because there isn’t space for everything you think is good.

So getting rejected is frustrating and a let down but you mustn’t let it make you conclude that the work you submitted isn’t good. Often it’s just that the dice rolled against you this time.

*I* think the work is strong and represents an interesting direction, and I hope you won’t let the rejection stop you from pursuing more work along those lines.

  3. Sorry they didnt select you, that stinks. But Paul is right, makes perfect sense. What pictures did you submit?
